Dear Warder
I have had some letters from the editor of the Atlantic Monthly which rather puzzle me, and as to which I should like your view.
He published in February 1937a an article of mine called “Philosophy’s Ulterior Motives”, which was, in my mind, a first sketch of a possible book. He, without my prompting, thought a book might be made of it, and wrote as enclosed. I told him (a) that any book I should wish to publish with you, and (b), by intimation, that the idea of such a book had been in my mind independently of him. I can’t quite make out what he means, or whether to say yes or no. Of course it would add greatly to the receipts if the book were first published as articles in the Atlantic Monthly, but it seems to me as if he were wanting more credit than would be his due.
I have sent a non-commital reply to his last letter.
Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
