My Beloved

It was an unspeakable happiness to be with you again — even though we were both saddened by Allen.3 I was thankful to be with you — it made it all easier. I felt you full of sadness, and I am sorry it is so — but I suppose it can’t be helped. Dear one, do feel that my spirit is with you always —  feeling what you feel — longing to be of more comfort to you — hating that you should be unhappy alone — but something very deep in me won’t let me think very much of happiness just now — it is not a principle, but an instinct — something I can’t conquer. I feel I could be different if I had more vitality, but my stock has been diminished by the war, and I can’t get any mental rest while the war lasts.

Dearest Darling, I send you all my love and my deepest tenderness. I long for Sunday in the country with you, my dear dear love — I bless you for all you are and for your wonderful wonderful love.
