Re Alec Craig's review of The Bertrand Russell Case, published in Eugenics Review.

49603

Re Unwin's article in Publisher's Weekly, 7 Nov. 1942, p. 1948.

49604

Congratulations on winning suit against Barnes.

49605
49606

Paper supply problem for History.

49607

Unwin quotes Scottish professor on BR's job prospects; Brains Trust.

49608
49609
Not a letter; rather financial figures relating to sales of BR's books.
49610

Re advance on History.

49611

BR's letter took 3 months. Corrected proofs of History must be on their way to Unwin. Trinity's action is delightful—a special Fellowship.

49612

The Deutsche Algemeine Zeitung, 31 May 1944, devoted a front page article to demonstrating that the U.K. is "deklassiert" ["downgraded"] on the strength of BR's Saturday Evening Post article. The title Unwin gives includes a misspelling of "Allgemeine". Unwin read the paper at Chatham House.

"It was a great pleasure to see you again, and to find you so full of beans."

49613

Horch was an "authors' and publishers' representative".

The date is the date on Allen and Unwin's datestamp.

Re Spanish and Portuguese rights in Power.

49614

The firm would prefer to typeset History from U.S. proofs, but has more confidence in BR's typescripts, unless he has looked through the proofs.

49615

Unwin is sending back to BR the typescript of Book 2, "Catholic Philosophy". Paper supply is meagre. Enclosed (not present) is an excerpt from the editor of the "Library of Philosophy".

49616

"Corrected proofs your History not yet received".

49617

"Parcels have arrived" re History.

49618

The corrected proofs of History have not arrived. BR is told how to inquire after the package.

49619

The two parcels of "corrected galley proofs" have turned up.

49620

A cheque for £500 in advance royalties has been paid to Child & Co.

49621

Re possible U.K. publication of The Philosophy of Bertrand Russell, edited by Schilpp.

49622

Re reviews of the Schilpp volume, enclosed: Peter A. Carmichael in New York Times; Albert Guerard, New York Herald-Tribune Weekly Book Review, 10 Sept. 1944.

49623

They are trying to get an unsold copy of Freedom and Organization from booksellers.

49624

Printers are so congested with government work that the History galleys may as well stay with BR for the next 2 months.

49625
49626

A draft telegram in Patricia's hand but signed "Russell". The draft is on the verso of the telegram described in record 66551.

49627

The Horizon article prompts Unwin to ask if BR has another book of essays ready. Unwin will give a fortnight's warning when the U.S. proofs are wanted back for the printers.

49628

They will start the typesetting of History in a fortnight and need the proofs back.

49629

BR will deliver the proofs Monday morning.

49630

"I always have at the back of my mind the possibility of a collected edition of your work." Unwin's terms are better than Home and van Thal's for BR.

49631

The army has ordered 2,650 copies of Freedom and Organization.

Are there any minor corrections for the stereoplates?

49632

Unwin encloses (not present) a letter from Sonia Bleeker of Simon and Schuster about publication dates for History and the Canadian rights. Unwin's Canadian house has already listed the book.

49633

Simon and Schuster must have suspected that Unwin had the Canadian rights when they included them in their contract with BR. Unwin suggests that his Canadian house distribute the Simon and Schuster edition until the Allen and Unwin edition is ready. Did Simon and Schuster try to get other rights? "... these days some (not all) of the American publishers are trying to grab all our markets. The position is becoming very serious."

49634

Ts. is titled "Note of Terms of Agreement with Simon and Schuster for Bertrand Russell's History of Philosophy...."

Re contract dated 20 May 1942.

Unwin thanks BR for sight of his Simon and Schuster contract and makes criticisms of it. If BR approves Unwin's letter to Simon and Schuster, would he write them, too, to state the facts are as stated by Unwin, who hopes to avoid a breach of contract by BR.

49635

Unwin proposes that his Canadian house should draw all supplies from Simon and Schuster for the first 9 months, and that Unwin handle Spanish and Portuguese rights with 25% to Simon and Schuster.

49636

Unwin missed BR but glad he approved Unwin's letter to Simon and Schuster and hopes BR has written them, too.

49637

First 8 galleys of History are enclosed (not present) in triplicate. (The last were sent to BR on 25 July 1945. Printing of the signatures was finished in May 1946.)

49638

The general advance of September 1944 is almost covered.

49639

Unwin notes that BR does not want to see revised proofs. They would like a proof of the Simon and Schuster index as guidance for the English indexer, whose expenses will be set against BR's royalties.

49640

Unwin is visiting Spain and Portugal at the request of the British Council. BR's pleasing letter from Simon and Schuster is returned to him, as Unwin received a copy, too.

49641

They are dealing with "the revise in page" of History proofs themselves, and enclose triplicate proofs of galleys 135-40. Not sent because BR's name is wrong ("Bertrand Russell").

49642

BR's name is now typed as "The Rt. Hon. Earl Russell", as in his statement in The Times (clipped at the end of the file).

The remainder of the letter is as in record 49641.

49643

A form letter to accompany proofs, specifying duplicate galleys 195-206 and copy. Printer's errors are to be marked in a different colour. Galleys 183-94 have been received, "corrected for revise page". The book title is now Western Philosophical Thought (i.e. the History). The former title was retained as the left running head of the 1st and 2nd UK editions.

49644

A form letter to accompany proofs, specifying triplicate galleys 207-26.

49645

A form letter to accompany proofs, specifying triplicate galleys 227-38.

49646

A form letter to accompany proofs, specifying triplicate galleys 239-52.

Apparently these were the last galley proofs.

49647

Unwin thanks BR for the corrected galleys of Simon and Schuster's index, which their indexer will follow in the main.

49648

They have special grants of paper for Power and On Education.

49649

There is an extreme labour shortage in the printing industry. They are pressing the printers to proceed with the proofing, but paper is another problem. They hope to publish the History in first half of 1946.

[Publication was delayed until 19 Nov. 1946.]

49650

Unwin sends an invitation from the Unilever Club Literary Society, contact Miss M.B. Penston, to speak on any literary subject for 15 guineas.

49651

Re Unwin's article on book production in yesterday's Observer.

"Drop in."

Unwin assumes BR prefers History to be titled Western Philosophical Thought. Simon and Schuster's enthusiastic letter of 25 September. Re the paper shortage and the Moberly Pool. Unwin would print at least 15,000 copies.

49652

Unwin asks for suggestions of prominent names to influence the Sir Walter Moberly Pool. Does BR know Cripps, president of the Board of Trade?

49653

Unwin suggests BR participate in the Lords' debate on printing enough British books for "the liberated countries of Europe where they are clamouring for them."

Unwin deposited their only copy of the U.S. edition of the History in the British Museum for copyright reasons.

49654

Re Lord Elton's paper debate in the Lords. Lord Holden will advise BR of when to be present. Unwin is thrilled about The Scope and Limits of Human Knowledge. Financial rules prevent Unwin from redirecting Swedish royalties to Constance Malleson, even to get home.

49655

Unwin agrees with BR's plan to support Lord Elton's motion on paper and expects BR to lunch with him at the Reform Club on 17 December.

49656

Unwin was glad to see BR again and sends him a further £500 of advance royalties on the History.

49657

Not a letter; rather notes titled "Bertrand Russell's Books—Recent Sales".

49658
49659

Unwin asks for the loan of D.K. Roy's Among the Great for consideration.

49660

Unwin hopes BR has reserved the right to include Physics and Experience in a future volume of essays.

49661
Unwin asks BR to confirm his publicity department's material on him.
49662

Re publishing BR's Geneva and Zurich lectures: the full work Power should be cited, and there is no doubt complete French and German translations will be published. (Note at foot: "see letter from Heinrich Straumann Mlle. Gretler-Stiflung, 12.5.46. (? Eugen Rentsch, the publisher"). Orders for History are coming in splendidly. Instalments of the sheets are on their way to the binders, and printing is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

49663

Unwin conveys the National Book League's invitation to give 1946's annual lecture. A maximum edition of 20,000 copies of the lecture is included in the arrangements.

49664

D.H. Smith wants permission to include Chap. 1 of Power in a book on précis writing.

49665

Unwin asks for a reply to the National Book League's invitation.

49666

All but the last two signatures of History have reached the binders, who are in a worse bottleneck than even during the war. Royalty cheques have been sent to BR and Patricia (the latter for Power). John Hadfield of the National Book League will contact BR. Unwin encloses (not present) proof of a History announcement in Books-of-the-Month.

49667

Publication of History is likely to be September.

49668

Unwin sends BR a set of sewn sheets of History. Unwin adds that the book will bulk slightly less after it has been "nipped" in the course of binding.

Also a carbon copy, TLS(CAR,X).

49669
49670

The first edition of 18,000 copies of History is oversubscribed. The problem is to get a further supply of paper.

49671

Unwin asks BR to write a letter for the Moberly Pool about paper for Delisle Burns' The First Europe.

49672

Unwin thanks BR for his letter on Burns' The First Europe. [See record 48057.] Unwin responds to BR's corrections to History: "We will then have them corrected before moulds are taken of the standing type or a reprint is put in hand."

49673

BR is being sent the Spanish translation of Inquiry.

49674

On the Spanish translation rights of Inquiry and W.W. Norton.

49675

S. Unwin is on a short British Council visit to the continent.

Re Nineteenth Century review.

The binders have not got sufficient supplies to enable publication before November.

49676

Re Eisler's review and omissions from it in The Nineteenth Century of portions that Allen and Unwin wished to quote in advertisements.

49677

Unwin encloses (not present) his account of his 17-day journey from Vienna to Budapest.

49678

The History of Western Philosophy is published today. Note says 19,000 copies. £1,100 have been advanced (a note says only £400 was provided for in the contract). The royalty is 20%, or 4s.6d. per copy.

49679

2,675 copies of Freedom and Organization were supplied to the Services Central Book Depot.

49680

The Tablet's review of History is enclosed (not present). They suspect the reviewer was "briefed with special instructions".

49681

On Let the People Think, U.S. rights, and Haldeman-Julius.

49682

Unwin has obtained "a very substantial special grant of paper" for a reprint of History.

49683

Re corrections to History in the "corrected paper bound copy", which is being passed to the printers. Unwin tells BR where additions may easily be made.

49684

BR is sent 4 copies of the Italian translation of Roads to Freedom.

49685

Not a letter; rather, ms. and ts. copies of an announcement of BR's A History of Western Philosophy, for booksellers.

49686

Internal notes re A History of Western Philosophy, including a reference to "35 Russell letters" to go out with proofs of the book. (The nature of the letters is unknown.)

49687

BR is sent the Spanish translation of The Conquest of Happiness.

49688

Unwin critiques Simon and Schuster's draft contract for Human Knowledge.

49689

Stanley Unwin has gone for a Swiss holiday. Philip argues against Lord Samuel's suggestion of inserting a leaflet into History advertising the Royal Institute of Philosophy (the task of binding 30,000 copies being large enough).

49690

Four copies of the Italian translation of Introduction are sent to BR.

49691

They are making the corrections to p. 847 of History.

49692

G.W. Prager's attached letter (not present) has a suggestion for p. 659 of History.

49693
