123104

"Re: Satan in the Suburbs."

"I have shown BR the letter to Allen and Unwin from Ulf von Mechow dated July 15, and he feels strongly in the light of this that it would be best not to go ahead with such a film under these conditions. This is obviously a disappointment to him...."

123105

"Problems of Philosophy. I enclose [not present] a copy of the letter to BR from Oriole Editions, New York, which I mentioned on the telephone yesterday."

123106

"I have sent you separately a letter dated October 6 from Marvin Swartz to BR [not present], who would be grateful if you could deal with it."

[No letter from M. Swartz is in BRACERS.]

123107

"Could you please order for BR in Wales three copies each of the following Unwin paperbacks: In Praise of Idleness, Mysticism and Logic, and Alan Wood's biography?"

123108

"Do you have a copy of the book in French by Professor Philippe Devaux entitled Russell, published in Paris by Editions Seghers? ... It would be pleasant if BR could reply without complicating any possible difficulty about copyright."

"Could you please order for BR two soft-back copies of his History of Western Philosophy?"

123109

"BR has received a complimentary copy of a Spanish edition of An Outline of Philosophy, published in Barcelona. It contains an introduction to that edition by a man called Manuel Sacristan. BR does not read Spanish and has no idea of the value of this introduction, and, as you know, does not like other people writing in his books without his knowledge."

123110

"B.R. has heard that the moon article has appeared in the Spanish paper ABC, and the Russian magazine Neva of December 1969 (translated by Grigori M. Lev)."

123111

"I enclose a greetings card which has been sent out by the Socialist Internationalist ... you will see that they have stolen a quotation from B.R., which he does not approve as the Socialist International is an organisation which makes noises about Greece and Spain and cannot bring itself to make connections with what is happening there and elsewhere. Is there a case for assaulting them?!"

The quotation is: "The world needs wisdom and human warmth in equal measure."

123112

"Herewith is the list of BR's books not in paperback in the U.S. and also the long awaited transcript of the Fath D'Arcy interview on B.R." (Neither present.)

123113

"The letter is addressed to the "Estate or Executors for the late Professor Bertrand Russell". It was answered by Farley on Feb. 11. The letter is undated but written after BR's death.

"I already have some photographs showing Russell with the late Hans Reichenbach in the Swiss Alps." He would like more photographs of BR. [Kirk and BR had an exchange on Reichenbach in 1959; see record 25302 and record 123380.]

"In about a month or six weeks I hope to assist in the production of a 30-minute closed-circuit television production on the significance of Russell as a philosopher. The program would not be released to the commercial mass media, but it might circulate among the campuses of the State University of New York."

123114

"The excerpt from Dear BR will appear on Thames Television on Sunday night in an Arts Programme called 'Aquarius'."

123115

"Are you saying that you do not have any of the hundreds of letters about the nomination of B.R. for the Nobel Peace Prize?"

123116

"Thank you for your letter of February 17 concerning Ralph Schoenman and the Irish Times. We had already written direct to Jack Black about it, and I hope that he may send a stronger letter than his proposed one."

"Would kindly return by hand when I next see you the brass block of BR's coat of arms which I left with Anton a couple of years ago."

123117

"Would it be possible for you to photocopy the correspondence between BR and ER and return the originals to her for her lifetime?"

[The originals have not been located at the BRPF offices. (March 2016)]

The Russell Archives have only photocopies.

123118

"I sent you very recently Unwin's letter to BR returning the memorandum", i.e. the private memorandum written by BR "on the failure of his early marriage and his relationships with various women". "Jack Black would like any evidence that there is to establish the date of the memorandum, as it is undated...."

There are various forms of BR's letter to Unwin in the Russell Archives. See record 120777, record 50907, record 14742, and record 123119.

123119

The letter concludes with the handwritten words: "(Signed) Russell".

See also record 120777, record 500907, and record 14742.

123120

BR agreed with necessary abbreviations of Vols. 2 and 3 of his Autobiography in Eastern Europe, but he did not want it cut elsewhere. "It will be very important to look carefully at the reply of the Romanians concerning the sections they wish to delete from Volumes II and III."

123121

"A short note on one of the points raised in your letter of 1st June, about the incorrect description of the 1966 printing of Mysticism and Logic, in what should have been described as a new format, as a revised edition."

123122

The letter is a reply to Unwin's letter of 10 June 1970 re Mysticism and Logic.

123123

Farley wants papers "relating to B.R.'s sponsorship of the committee for the limitation of secret police powers, which operated in Britain in about 1955/56...."

123124

"There is little doubt that some of the post-1960 material was originally drafted by any one of five or six hands, and although BR would amend, incorporate, reject or accept drafts for instant use, this could raise in an enduring record problems of style and content unforeseen by BR."

123125

"Allen and Unwin have received a letter from a Mr. Thomas Podlaha of Prague. Mr. Podlaha asserts that he is the artist who did the portrait drawing of BR which appears under the name of Robin Guthrie on the paperback edition of History of Western Philosophy."

123126

"The BBC plan to do two things about Bertrand Russell's centenary: a Radio 3 broadcast by Freddie Ayer at 8.00 pm for 20 minutes on May 18, and a BBC2 TV talk by Ayer at 9.20 pm on May 19 in the 'Review' programme. Could you try to get recordings of these programmes?"

This file contains several other letters about the centenary.

123127

This petition on "Vietnam—How Much Longer" was to be placed as an advertisement on 25 April 1967. This printed document contains signatories, their names are typed carbon. The list includes Dora Russell and John Conrad Russell.

123128

Re The ABC of Relativity.

"I enclose a copy of a letter from Sir Stanley concerning certain alterations which could be made to your book by Professor Pirani.

We look forward to receiving your instructions regarding this proposal."

The letter in the file from Allen and Unwin is from Unwin's secretary.

123129

Re The ABC of Relativity.

"BR asked me to thank you for your letter of October 7 and say that he agrees to the proposals in Allen and Unwin's letter to you of October 1."

123130

Re Auto, vol. 1.

"I enclose proofs of the jacket which have been sent by Allen and Unwin. Lord and Lady Russell have told Mr. R. Eames, the production manager at Unwin's, that they do not like the photograph at all...." Their reasons are then given.

The jacket is not present.

123131

Haldane indicates that BR is receiving a copy of this letter c/o the Royal Society. She has been "in correspondence with Lord Russell early this year concerning both his and my late husband's papers." She gives copyright permission for a J.B.S. Haldane letter to apear in Auto., vol. 3.

The same file has many permissions letters.

123132

"Here are some proofs of Lady Russell (incl. the one Lord Russell indicated for the book) [not present] and of the group with Lord Russell." "Please give Lord and Lady Russell my most affectionate greetings and tell them how happy I shall be if they would allow us one of the groups for the 3rd volume in addition to one of Lady Russell."

123133

Huxley tries to clarify what he meant in his letter of 13 March 1963 (document .051348, record 78323).

Later in the file is another letter with an earlier date, 4 October 1968, in which he asks for a footnote.

123134

"B.R. does not know whether A.M. Graves is still living ... Alys gave BR permission shortly before her death, and Unwin knew about this."

123135

Page 2 of this letter is not in file 10.

"BR says that the acknowledgements page of Volume III is excellent."

123136

"I send herewith proofs of the covers for the paperback of the Autobiography, using the photographs which you selected."

123137

"Lady Russell tells me that BR was of the opinion that the photographs of the little boy seated, by Gunn and Stuart of Richmond, is of his brother Frank. Lady Russell herself is doubtful whether the other photograph by Byrne and Co. of Richmond is of BR. There is a serial number on the first photograph...."

123138

"... but the death of Lord Russell does not make less urgent the question of a paper back edition of his Autobiography."

123139

Armstrong has enclosed three "prints of the montage for the jacket of your book Bertrand Russell's America." BR's head is on the Statue of Liberty.

123140

Contract for "The Effect of Science on Social Institutions" signed by BR. A later handwritten note indicates that it was published as Icarus, or the Future of Science.

123141

The contract for War Crimes in Vietnam has been signed by BR.

The file mainly concerns the publication of that book.

However, the first documents in the file concern the launching of the BRPF; there is also a copy of the first Foundation Bulletin.

123142

The letter is presumably from Felton. He thanks BR for his letter of 11 December. He has "no firm news yet on the Vietnam books [sic] publication in the United States...."

123143

"I would like to confirm that I wrote to Stanley Unwin on 28th November clearly informing him that you did not want any alterations whatsoever made to the Vietnam book."

123144

"I have today received written confirmation from Sir Stanley [Unwin] that not a single word in the Vietnam book will be altered and that the proofs went straight to the printers exactly as passed by you."

123145

He is sending BR an advance copy of War Crimes in Vietnam (Russell's Library, no. 3194). He has signed his initials on this carbon and added a handwritten P.S.

This file contains several letters between Unwin and Anton Felton.

123146

"Thank you very much for your letter of 22nd November in connection with the Vietnam book. I will, of course, do all I can to implement your instructions."

123147

"It was a great pleasure for my wife and me to see you again in London. We are particularly pleased that the wills are signed...." "The manuscript of the Vietnam book arrived today, and I am asking Chris Farley to return the corrected page proofs to you immediately. I have given careful attention to the comments by the libel reader and to Sir Stanley Unwin's own remarks, and have made a few alterations accordingly." "In addition I should emphasise that there is a wealth of evidence to support many of the statements in the book that have been queried."

123148

"Thank you for your letter of November 23. I think it will be helpful if I try to make myself unmistakably clear about the Vietnam book. I do not wish a further word of the book to be altered, and I look to you to protect it against the suggestions made by the libel-reader and Unwin." "I am sure that it will be better for all of us if Unwin writes his books and I write mine."

123149

"I am pleased to learn that the Vietnam book has gone to press...." "I am anxious to ensure the book's publication in the United States, which seems more important than its appearance here."

123150

"I note that neither the New Statesman, The Spectator nor the Sunday newspapers have reviewed War Crimes in Vietnam." "We are further extremely exasperated by the absence of any apparent result in attempts to find publishers in America or major Western European countries after many months."

123151

"Dell is very interested in" War Crimes in Vietnam.

123152

"L.T. sent from Wales, February 25 1968". "Strongly applaud demonstrations ... university authorities should oppose genocide not victimise honourable students in mediaeval Oxbridge manner."

123153

"I am writing to confirm that my article 'Let's Stay Off the Moon', which recently appeared under other titles, was part of my assignment to the Foundation, and I have no further interest in it."

There is other correspondence in this file concerning this article.

123154

Enclosed is a copy of Brian Carr's typescript of his book on BR for Sixth Form Schools (not present).

123155

"Lady Russell asked me to send you her enclosed comments on Carr's typescript."

123156

"I enclose copies of letter which I mentioned in my letter, and which Lady Russell has now seen. As I gather Mr. Farley has told you, she has given her assent to their being printed in my memoir Russell Remembered.

The original letters have their own entries in BRACERS.

123157

BR is too busy to look at Laric's work. He will try later.

123158

BR is surprised that Laric is uncertain as to BR's views on physical objects.

The carbon of this letter is document .051983, record 1889.

123159

The letter is not signed, presumably because it is missing its third page. The carbon has three pages: document .051985, record 77883. There is also a dictated one: RA1 750, record 14663.

On Laric's thesis re BR's theory of perception.

Laric would like to visit BR on Feb 4.

123167

BR sends Haynes a copy of the book he wrote while in Brixton Prison, Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy, for any collection he might have of books written in prison. Captain Haynes was the governor of the prison when BR was incarcerated.

The letter and book were offered for sale at the Oxford Book Fair in April 2013. Apparently Captain Haynes had a private collection!

The vendor wrote K. Blackwell on 22 September 2013: "As regards provenance, I purchased this as part of a small but interesting library from a deceased estate. The family name was Dodgson; perhaps some genealogical research may be able to link Dodgson with Haynes? Perhaps Dodgson had inherited it in the 1970's as he had obtained a valuation of the volume at that date; perhaps for insurance purposes or even probate? As you have expressed a possible interest in acquiring the item I have reserved it for you until I hear one way or another. David Bristow."

The copy of the book concerned is shelved with other copies of the book but with a photocopy of this letter tucked inside.

123168

"Thank you for your very charming letter. I am glad that at least one of the adjectives you applied to me in 1948 is still applicable." Kinsey had called him "the greatest living philosopher", then found his plane had crashed in Norway.

The typed letter is in RA1 720, record 25299.

123169

There is another photocopy in RA1 720, record 23757.

123170

The typed carbon is document .125983, record 36341.

The ribbon copy has a vertical line that Russell drew to separate "in" and "sanity"; in the carbon copy they appear as one word, making a very different statement!

123171

BR wrote this letter in reply to her letter of 15 July, document .125984, record 36342.

"In great sorrow, nobly borne, there is a wisdom not otherwise obtainable, a comradeship in the load of universal sorrow, a gain in the power of giving help to others in great grief."

123172

Feinberg replies to her letter of 12 February with an enclosure concerning Basic Writings.

123173

The enclosure is titled "Comments on List of Additions to 'Basic Writings'" by Denonn and Egner.

123174

"I hasten to enclose herewith a copy of the list of additional items which Professor Egner and Lester Denonn are considering for the second edition of Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell."

123175

A photocopy of the TLS is in Rec. Acq. 77, record 53521. BR will send a copy of Eisler's Morals without Mystery to his London literary agent.

123176

Re his manuscript, Morals without Mystery which he has sent to BR.

123177

"BR asks me to thank you for your letter of November 26. He has considered the typescript from Lee Eisler at some length and feels that there is nothing further that he can do. I have written to Eisler to tell him this.

"Sometime in the past few days BR has completed a private memorandum about Ralph Schoenman, and he would like a copy of it kept in the safe at Continuum along with his memoires of his former wives."

123178

It is indicated that BR received this carbon copy of this letter. The letter concerns a proposed book, edited by Jager, of BR's early essays.

123179

An outline of Jager's book, later published as The Development of Bertrand Russell's Philosophy is enclosed.

Jager visited BR at Plas Penryhn on 2 July 1962. Jager has recently acquired a proof copy of Which Way to Peace? with corrections in BR's hand.

123180

BR does not recall the proof copy of Which Way to Peace? He is interested in Jager's proposed book.

A copy of the TLS is in Rec. Acq. 99, record 54218.

123181

Felton asks if she has considered his letter of 3 April re Marvin Kaye.

There are many letters in file 8. At the beginning of the file is a folded poster, advertising A Guided Tour of Intellectual Rubbish! written by Marvin Kaye and starring Robert Rounseville.

123182

Felton encloses a letter from Marvin Kaye. There are many letters from Kaye in the file.

123183

"Herewith, at long last, the completed script of Marvin Kaye's A Guided Tour of Intellectual Rubbish!" (not present).

123184
123185

She has read the script of The Guided Tour of Intellectual Rubbish "with the greatest of interest and I think that it does a good job of presenting many of my husband's precepts without distortion—a difficult job." She goes on to list some reservations she has about the script, for Feinberg's ears only.

123186

"Thank you for your two letters of 2 April enclosing Mr. Black's account concerning the sale of Archives II." "I am disappointed that you cannot yet reply to my letter of 19 March and may not be able to do so for another fortnight."

123187

The letter concerns Marvin Kaye.

123188

"Christopher Farley has passed on to me the blurb leaflet for the Guided Tour of Intellectual Rubbish! sent to him by Mr. Feinberg. What do you think of it? It seems to me not altogether happy."

The script is in file 9.

123189

The letter concerns Douglas Lackey's Essays in Analysis.

There are many other letters in this file from different people concerning this book.

123190

The letter is about Douglas Lackey's Essays in Analysis.

"It looks to me as if it were not only interesting but also very important."

123191

The letter concerns Douglas Lackey's Essays in Analysis.

123192

A group entry for correspondence between Lackey, Allen and Unwin, Anton Felton, Barry Feinberg and others about Lackey's book of BR's philosophical papers, Essays in Analysis.

123193

"I enclose herewith copies of letters from Professor Schilpp and Lester Denonn in response to our enquiry about Dr. Jack Pitt. Would you like us to write to Mr. Blackwell in this connection?"

The letter is in file 12 as are the Schilpp letter of 14 January and the Denonn letter of 19 January. Neither was acquainted with Dr. Pitt.

123194

"I do not know Dr. Pitt of Fresno." "Please convey my kind regards to Lord Russell."

123195

"I have a problem. You may recollect that in 1969 we raised with Lord Russell the possibility of adding to Human Knowledge an edited version of the notes that he had compiled and which were not at the time included, as he half wished, in My Philosophical Development, but which now exist in manuscript at McMaster and have been looked at and edited by Professor Jack Pitt." "... I would like to find out whether, in principle, those who look after Lord Russell's affairs like the idea of this new edition edited by Professor Pitt and whether they would like to look it over to see whether Professor Pitt has done a good job."

123196

"Thank you for sending a copy of the new cover for the book of letters. My wife and I both find it delightful."

"I have given careful thought to the letter to you from Mr. Rayner Unwin dated June 19, concerning the book Necessary Russell by William Ready. It is not quite entirely clear from Mr. Unwin's letter whether Professor Ready has merely failed to obtain permission to reprint from the books mentioned and to identify the passages concerned, or whether, on the other hand, he has altered or rewritten passages from books by or about me."

123197

Regarding William Ready's book Necessary Russell: it "is readable and in my opinion more interesting than the Gottschalk biography in that it gives a good deal of information about your archives." However, "it is obvious that there exist throughout the book many instances of outright plagiarism...." "... the problems presented by a legal action would be far more disagreeable than allowing the sale of the 10,000 copies already printed."

123198

"Many thanks for the copy of Professor Rotblat's letter. It doesn't sound as if we should receive his edition of The ABC of Atoms very soon!"

123199

Rotblat feels guilty about not finishing the task of bringing The ABC of Atoms up to date. "Obviously, this job requires more thought and time than I had envisaged at the beginning...."

Related letters are in the file.

123200

"I enclose for your consideration a letter [not present] from Professor Ruja of San Diego College requesting permission to edit and publish your Hearst articles."

123201

File 15 concerns the publication of Ruja's Mortals and Others.

There are many letters to/from Ruja and others. A few letters in this file concern The Collected Stories of Bertrand Russell.
