My dear Lucy1

This is a goodbye letter, with great regret that I can’t bid you goodbye in person. After months of waiting, we are being suddenly shipped off at a moment’s notice — Peter and Conrad are already gone and I go in 2 or 3 days. It was nice being your neighbours, and your house seemed almost a bit of England. Please tell Helen2 I am very sorry not to write to her too — and give my love (or whatever she would like better) to Edith.

Ever yours aff
B.R.
