Dear Wells
Thank you for your kind letter, and for “Orders is Orders”, which I read with a feeling that it would be a better world if people would listen to you.
Your personal news is sad, and much distresses me. And the state of the world is not such as to inspire in you a wish for prolongation of a painful life.
If it is not too much effort for you, I should very much like to see you. I (but not my wife) will be at Mount Royal Hotel, Marble Arch, June 9–14, and if your daughter-in-law would suggest a tea-time during that period I should be very glad. My wife hopes that an opportunity for her to meet you may occur before long.
With warm friendship,
Yours
Russell.
My telephone number is Cambridge 87152.
