Dear B.B.
Thank you very much for your letter of March 29, which reached me only a few days ago. It was sad to hear of Mary’s death, though in view of her sufferings one could hardly wish for anything else. I had been very fond of her, and was glad, a little while before the war began, to renew friendly relations with her. The little moment when you and I met was also a great pleasure to me.
You must have had a very bad time during the war; I often thought of you, and I got news of you when I could.
I have a son of 23, a daughter 21, and another son 8. My older son is in the Navy; they taught him Japanese and sent him to Washington, where he is. My daughter is at the Ministry of Information, but her job there is ending and she plans to take an academic job in America — she took her degree at Radcliffe, and they want her back.
I enjoy being back at Trinity. I am just about to publish a history of philosophy from Thales to the present day — at least it is about to appear in America; in England the government won’t spare the paper.
It would be delightful to see you again at I Tatti, but whether it will be possible I don’t know.
With much affection,
Yours very sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
