Dear Bessie,
Thank you very much indeed for your letter. Sympathy from real friends is a great help, especially when it goes equally to both. I feel sure that in the long run what we have decided is best for us both, but of course for the present it is full of pain. You will realize that we have only come to this decision very slowly, but the years gradually persuaded us of its necessity.
I gather from your letter that Bob is away. If he is coming back soon, might I come to you for a week-end some time this month? Or I could come for a night in the middle of the week probably. We could avoid my affairs, which are painful and difficult to speak of.
