My dear Kate
It is 100 years since I last wrote to you, and you must have thought I had forgotten you. But that is not so. I have been overwhelmed with work — chiefly the Reith lectures for the B.B.C. which will in due course be published as a book.
You shouldn’t spend money on sending us parcels as we feed like fighting cocks and I am rich while you are poor. If there were any way of sending you money I would do so, but I can’t any longer get the publishers to send you money as the income tax people object. If you ever come to England again I can pay your expenses while in this country.
I expect you teach better than you think — in fact you do most things better than you think.
It is shocking your having to pay $100 to get your thesis typed and bound. If you know anybody coming to England you could borrow from them and let me pay them in sterling.
Peter has been ill and difficult. I am tired and weary of life. Conrad flourishes and is amazingly good at Greek and Latin. He and I (without Peter, who is in a nursing home) are about to go to Provence and Sicily.
Much love, my dear Kate.
