My dear Kate
Thank you for your letter of Feb. 26. I enclose a cheque for $110, which I happen to have handy — it is meant to be $100 but you can give me $10 in cash when I come. I can easily afford it, thanks to your money and John’s. I am glad you are seeing Jessie Whitehead — I remember her before she stammered, as a little girl overshadowed by her elder brother — a situation you can understand — Her mother always favoured the boys, which I thought unfair. Give her messages from me if you see her again.
I hope your tutor will like your thesis. If any of it is available I should much like to see it when I come.
Poor Kate, I am sorry you suffer about Amiel. It is part of the war, which makes everything go wrong. Mankind are strangely insane.
I hope to go home about the same time as you, but Peter and Conrad may have to stay till next year.
Much love.
Your aff
Diddy
P.S. I shall be here this time next week, but not after that. Addresses:
