My dear Kate
Thank you for your very nice letter. You can write again to this address when you feel so disposed.
I shall be at Northampton Mass. (Smith College) March 27 and 28, and I will come to visit you just before or just after that date, if it suits you. I find I can’t manage it sooner.
Now I have to tackle a matter that may worry you. You are still a minor, and need the permission of the Court of Chancery if you stay abroad. Your mother and I both undertook that you would be in my care while in America, but I am going home in the summer. I don’t know whether the Court will give you leave to stay after I have gone home. If you stay without leave, your mother and I are both liable to be sent to prison. I must write to Tylor about this. I suggest that you send me a statement giving such reasons for staying here as you think likely to appeal to the Court; I will forward it to Tylor. For my part, as you know, I would rather you came home, but I do not want to exercise authority about it. You can, if you like, write direct to Tylor or to your mother; but let me know what you do.
Alas I have no time for more. Much love, dear Kate.
Yr aff
Diddy
