Dear Kate
Your letter of Oct. 4 needs an answer, but I have nothing very helpful to say. You are absolutely right that nagging and criticism can only do harm. Obviously what Charlie needs is success, even if it were only a very modest success. I wish you were in England. I could employ him to do research and secretarial work, which would be very genuinely useful to me. And I could help you, as I help John. But I suppose he would dislike living in England. And of course it would be much more difficult for you to get a job here.

I am going to Australia partly because I have never been there, partly because I think I may be useful, but mainly to make money, as the sales of my best sellers are rapidly diminishing.
<part of photocopy excised> circumstances. I do wish I could see you, dear Kate. I want to comfort you. Goodbye with much love.
