My dear Kate
I have had two excellent interesting letters from you about the state of mind of the young people you meet. I am not at all surprised by the tendency to take to religion. As for yourself, try to separate the ethical and dogmatic aspects of religion. Belief that the universe is such-and-such, if it goes beyond what physics says, is irrational, and to adopt an irrational belief because it is comforting is infantile and cowardly. But the ethical aspects of religion are a different matter.
Peter is gone to live in N. Wales, and we shall only be together during Conrad’s holidays. In the autumn I shall get rooms in College.
As the family disintegrates, your affection is an increasing comfort to me. Goodbye dear Kate.
