My dear Gilbert,

Thank you for your letter. I am sorry that we are so widely separated in space. My Helsinki speech is the last item in a volume which I am sending herewith and which I hope you will not mind accepting as a present. It was made at a time when there was more ground for optimism than there is now. Eden and Krutshev have destroyed all grounds for hope in the near future. I think that an international force is the only ultimate solution of the world’s troubles, but I do not think it can be effected until there is close co-operation between America and Russia, which is a somewhat distant prospect. I return herewith Miss Jones’s letter.

Yours ever,
BR
