My dear Gilbert,

It was a great grief to read of Mary’s death. She had a very rare nobility which caused me to feel a profound admiration, not lessened by its not being reciprocal. Although it is over fifty years since I saw much of her, she was often in my thoughts as someone whom I felt it important to have known. You have my deepest sympathy.
