Dear Gilbert,

I think your doctor is entirely in the right. I should not like to think of your travelling in this Arctic weather. I am glad to know that your doctor sometimes tells the truth. She can make sure of this by saying, “I invariably lie.” Perhaps she has taken this precaution. I am amused by what you tell me about Bagehot. One gathers from his books that he had more of an impish quality than one expects of a Victorian Banker.

Yours ever,
BR
