Dear Gilbert,

Thank you for your letter.1 My thanks are the more pronounced as you had to overcome the agony of divorce from your typewriter.

As for Shaw, I disliked his arrogance as exhibited in my story about him and Masaryk,2 but I disliked much more his quite intolerable cruelty toward anyone whose painful experiences threw doubt upon his faith in Holy Russia.

I agree with you that Wells was a lower type, but I think he was less given to the deliberate and intentional infliction of suffering, provided it was human beings and not animals that suffered.
