Dear Gilbert,
Thank you for your nice letter.1 I am glad you did not think my stories2 totally despicable.
With regard to what you say about your and my development, it is no doubt true in the main, but I think there was a difference owing to the impact of the First War upon me. Until 1914 I was not a rebel and quite expected the Liberal Party to do the sort of things I wanted done. My outlook became more like that of Shelley and Godwin after 1914 than it had been before. Since then I have been gradually calming down. But I do not think I agree with you about custom. Russia and Japan have persuaded me that custom is less powerful than I thought.
