My dear Gilbert
Thank you very much for your letter. I saw Fisher the other day and had a lot of talk with him about Russia. I have returned more than ever a pacifist, as much against revolutionary wars as against others.
What a joke about Asquith! I wish he had accepted. Shall I try to get myself made Speaker there?
Yes, a divorce will be a relief. Hitherto it would always have interfered greatly with my work; now it won’t. The law is certainly very ridiculous.
I think the future of the world depends enormously on peace with Russia — if that is got now, I believe the whole world will begin to mend, but if not, the evils of the last 6 years will be a trifle compared to those of the next 6.
Give my love to Mary if she is willing. Thank you for all your kindness.
Yours ever,
B. R.
