Sir Stanley Unwin,
Messrs. George Allen & Unwin,
40, Museum Street,
London, W.C.2.
Dear Unwin,
I am more distressed than I can say that I have landed you in trouble about translation rights.1 In 1940, when the Inquiry was published in America, sinkings were very frequent, and I found that a large proportion of my letters to England failed to arrive. At that moment therefore, I thought it would be impossible for you to deal with translation rights in South America. I intended to terminate the temporary arrangement with Norton as soon as Atlantic crossings became safer, but to my profound regret the New York row made me forget the whole thing. I do not know what you wish me to do now, but I am ready to do anything whatever towards putting the matter right in so far as possible.
With humble apologies.
Yours sincerely,
<signed> Bertrand Russell.
