BR TO ALLEN AND UNWIN / STANLEY UNWIN, 7 JUNE 1946
BRACERS 48058. TLS(X). George Allen and Unwin Ltd.

Trinity College,
Cambridge.
7th June, 1946.

Sir Stanley Unwin,
Messrs. George Allen & Unwin,
40, Museum Street,
London, W.C.2.

Dear Unwin,

I am more distressed than I can say that I have landed you in trouble about translation rights.1 In 1940, when the Inquiry was published in America, sinkings were very frequent, and I found that a large proportion of my letters to England failed to arrive. At that moment therefore, I thought it would be impossible for you to deal with translation rights in South America. I intended to terminate the temporary arrangement with Norton as soon as Atlantic crossings became safer, but to my profound regret the New York row made me forget the whole thing. I do not know what you wish me to do now, but I am ready to do anything whatever towards putting the matter right in so far as possible.

With humble apologies.

Yours sincerely,
<signed> Bertrand Russell.

I am more distressed … trouble about translation rights. Unwin, on 4 June (record 50719), had inquired about the assignment of Spanish translation rights to An Inquiry into Meaning and Truth (1940). Spanish translations of it were published in 1946 and 1983.
