Dear Warder

Warmest thanks to you and Polly for your kindness to John and Kate, who greatly enjoyed their little time in New York, owing to you. I am afraid they were probably too shy to thank you. We had a terrible 2 days during which we believed, what the U.S. government told us, that we had to clear out of the country at once. Fortunately Miss Perkins relented in time, otherwise John and Kate would have been on the San Francisco Limited which was wrecked in the Nevada desert.

We are having a very good time taking them to the beauty spots of California. This place is 9000 ft up, and they are at the moment going up a 13,000 ft mountain. It does them good to have a holiday from bombs and black-outs and war alarms. Life in Europe now-a-days is hell. I am quite recovered, except that I am not yet up to serious mountain climbing. We return to Santa Barbara in a few days.

Would it bother you to see John and Kate off when they return? If not, I will let you know the date definitely — probably Queen Mary about Sp. 20.
