Dear Warder

The proofs of Power arrived yesterday, and I return them herewith. I have considered every point you raised, and have usually accepted your suggestions. But as regards “averse from”, I cannot admit that any one but the author has any rights in the decision.

I note that your office has, at somea points, corrected my punctuation, and I have had to correct it back. It would not be fair to charge me for these corrections. Every author has his own views on punctuation, and has a right to them.

As regards spelling, you have always hitherto allowed me English spelling, but this time you have altered it throughout the typescript. If there is any serious reason for this, I will acquiesce; but I don’t like it.

There is no Table of Contents with the proofs.

I am completely puzzled by the three or four pages of Title in the proofs. It seems you have one page saying “Power” and another saying “A new social analysis”. Surely these ought to come on the same page.

I assume that, in the book, each chapter will begin on a new page. Are you going to omit the word “Chapter” before the numeral? If so, why?

I have added a footnote about “Liberal”. This is the only typographically serious correction I have made. In deference to a cable from your office, I have concealed the facts about Jenghis Khan’s mother, and have omitted the reference to her.

Your letter of July 20, with printers’ queries, reached me in time.

Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.

I will get Unwin to send you the Index I shall make for him.
