Dear Warder
I have just received your letter of June 23. I think all the points you raise can best be dealt with in galley proofs, which I shall be glad to have. In order to deal with them, I shall need the typescript returned at the same time. The only suggestion I definitely reject is “averse to” instead of “averse from”. All careful writers use the latter. “Averse” means “turned away”, and you can’t be turned away to anything. With regard to “liberal”, I think I must add an explanatory sentence for the American edition; I do not see how otherwise to make my point, which is that what all Europe calls “liberalism” is connected with commerce, as opposed to (a) feudalism (b) industrialism.
I hear from Feakins that I am to see journalists at your house on arrival in New York. We shall sail from Southampton on the Britannic on Sp. 17, arriving probably Sp. 25 (tourist). We have decided after all to bring the child’s nurse, as otherwise Peter would have no freedom. I do not know whether you are either able or willing to put us all up; and I do not remember your address. Would you mind letting me know about these points? We should not want to stay more than 2 nights in New York, as we should want to get established in Chicago before the term begins.
Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
P.S. I should be grateful for a copy of the letter that I wrote about, which disappeared.
