Dear Warder
I have had a letter from a Dr Scott Buchanan of Chicago offering me what seems a very agreeable job. But from what he says I fear that it may be reactionary and the sort of thing my radical friends would think I ought not to be connected with. You probably know about it; it is a committee concerned with a conservative reform of education. In some ways I agree, as I think American education needs more grind than it has. Would you be very kind and let me know whether, on public grounds, I ought not to be a member of their committee? President Hutchins is the leading spirit. So far as I can see, they offer me what is virtually a research fellowship, on condition of my taking some part in their work. My wish is to accept, but not if doing so would be wicked. They seem to be anti-Dewey, but I don’t mind that.
Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
