Dear Warder
Meynell suddenly informed me that he had had to part with control of the Nonesuch Press, and that the new management, while recognizing their obligation to me,a would like to get out of it, even at the cost of the £100 already advanced to me on account of royalties. It was obviously the only thing to agree, as a reluctant publisher would never do. So I immediately went to the Hogarth Press, which is the great-grandaughter2 of Mr. Pattle, whose corpse’s adventures, as related by Mrs. Carlyle, enliven the early part of the book; also the step-daughter of an intimate friend of my mother’s, who is frequently mentioned. It (to continue your style in speaking of publishers) jumped at the book, but cannot, at this late date, get it out in the autumn; the suggestion is 2 volumes, one in the spring and one in the autumn. I am afraid this must inconvenience you, but there was nothing I could do about it.
Looking forward to seeing you both.
Yours very sincerely
Bertrand Russell
