Dear Mr. Norton,
Bertie has just returned from Scandinavia, and being overwhelmed with work, asks me to reply to your letter of October 4th, only to say that he does not want the duplicate T.S. of Freedom v. Organisation. The house is already crammed with all the papers he has accumulated in his lifetime, and with those that his parents accumulated in theirs, and I often have nightmares in which we are both engulfed and lost for ever in drifts of manuscript.
I take rather ill the suggestion that he should shave his head and become a monk. You say there is only one objection to his becoming a Carthusian; but I know of several. Perhaps loss of hair is the most serious, but the others are also weighty.
It is a relief that you find people so pacifistic. Here it is all the other way round and former pacifists seem the most warlike of all.
It is nice of you to take an interest in my recovery.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Spence
