Dear Norton
Thank you for your letter of April 8. I will take your points seriatim.
(1) I am sorry, but I don’t like “Man and Education”. It sets one wondering what is the alternative to “Man”, and the only one I can think of is “The Performing Flea”. I have not yet thought of another title, but if one occurs to me I will write at once.
(2) I return one copy of your letter about the other two books, duly signed by me.
(3) I will send you a revised synopsis as soon as I possibly can, together with some material. I think I can manage it within 10 days. I have come down here in order to be quiet and get on with the job.
(4) My books tend to be always between 60,000 and 70,000 words. I think you may count on the book being between these limits. I am all for putting it at $2.50, and if that requires not more than a certain length, I will see to it that I do not exceed that length.
If one can believe English newspapers, America must be in a very bad way. I do not want you to feel that contracts cannot be revised if business goes on being so bad. You have always been generous, and I should hate to be a burden to you.
All best wishes.
Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
