Dear Wardour,a

Thank you for your letter of February 4th, with the enclosure, which I return.

Miss Shumakerb is quite unduly smug.  I am pretty nearly certain that there is no school in America, however modern, which does what Neill and I do, and I have found that all Americans who believe themselves progressive in matters of education, if they study my school or Neill’s, consider that we ought to make certain concessions to conventional opinion which we should regard as ruinous. Miss Schumaker shows how little she understands our principles by supposing it inconsistent of Neill to order children out of his study. However, I have done what I could for Neill; I will not pursue the subject further.

I am sorry The Scientific Outlook has proved a bad title. I will be guided by you as to the title of my next book. I will call it “One, two, three – Bang!” if you like. This would be a fairly accurate title. You could add, as a subtitle, “An historico-economic investigation of the socio-political causes of the war, 1914–1918.”

With all best wishes,

Yours sincerely,
Bertrand Russell.
