Dear Norton

Seven copies of The Scientific Outlook arrived from you: I like the get-up very much indeed. Thank you for them. I wonder how America will like the book. It has been proved that bad times promote piety, so probably its atheism will be unwelcome. People believe most in the goodness of God when they have least evidence of it. (There is statistical proof of this.)

I reach New York on Oct. 23, on the Biemen. If still agreeable to you, I should love to accept your invitation to stay with you on landing. But don’t put yourself out if it is not convenient.

All best wishes to Mrs. Norton and yourself.

Yours cordially
Bertrand Russell.

Whoever did the extracts on the flap did a most excellent job.
