Dear Norton,

Thank you for your letter of September 29th. You need not in the least regret having had to write to me as you did, but as a matter of fact what I suggested to you, if I remember right, was not that you should publish “The Retreat from Parenthood” itself so much as that the lady in question might be capable of writing something else of more interest to American readers. However, my letter to you was chiefly actuated by sympathy for a very hard case. Her husband, who is a distinguished intellectual, has finally become dotty after many years of habitual drunkenness, and she is left with a young child to educate out of her own earnings. I was willing to help her if I could, but you need not feel apologetic because I tried in the wrong direction.

Yours sincerely,
<signed> Bertrand Russell.
