My Darling

Your dear little letter3 came this morning and brought the warmth of your heart with it. I have loved you more than ever before since our parting on Sunday.4 But I am imprisoned in weariness and in vague doubts and troubles that I must work out alone — and instinct urges me to keep away from all emotions for a time.

I have got to break through to some new kind of thought — I don’t quite know what. Please, please, don’t be unhappy — I shall work through and come back — my inner life is always a succession of winters and summers, but sometimes the winters are very bleak.

Goodbye my dear one.

B.
