This letter handwritten on 1 January 1941 covers much of the same subject matter as her typescript (document .104579lc, record 113247), although the wording is completely different.

There is also a typed letter on the same date, document .104579ni, record 113250. In this original letter she writes that her old cottage at Sundborn has come available and she will be going there in a few days. In the typed letter she is already there.

There is also a typed carbon of this letter which Malleson sent to Phyllis Urch, located in box 6.82. The top copy appears not to be present.

This letter begins by noting that she received that day BR's letter of 23 March. Her typed copy letter written one day later (document .104579np, record 113256) also begins with reference to BR's letter of 23 March—only this time it had arrived two days before, i.e. 10 May. The text of the letters is different.

"Love from Colette" is at the foot, but it is unsigned.

This letter appears on p. 289, the last of five pages titled "Letters from Bertrand Russell". Colette wanted to include these letters in her book In the North and had already sent the ribbon copy of the pages to her publisher, Jonathan Cape.

The pages contain 3 letters from BR: 25 July 1940 (record 115507), [25] October [1940] (record 115505), [18] January 1941 (record 115506). Separate entries have been made for each of these letters. The book finally appeared in 1946, from Gollancz.

There is also a carbon of this letter, page 1 only (document .104402, record 125001); the last part of the letter is omitted. A typed letter of the same date also exists, document .104579nq, record 113257. Its text is different.

The enclosed photograph is of Colette wearing a fur coat.

There is letter from Colette in the Urch typescript with the same date: document .104579nr, record 113258. The text is completely different with the exception of her intention to include BR's son John in her will.

"Sundborn. Sweden. 4th October. 43. My Dearest Bertie, I was getting very uneasy and longing for a letter and thinking about you a great deal—". There is also a carbon of this letter, document .200804m, record 116399.

"My dear dear love, I am afraid that my farewell letter to you must stand—" This letter is in an envelope with a registered mail number and several postmarks.

Colette brings up many specifics from their past.

She also tells of a coincidental visit to Joséphine Hall's office—"a slatternly chit of a girl"—with BR's unanswered recent correspondence "strewn about anyhow": one from Hertz, one from the Royal Society, another from India, another about BR's UNESCO speech. Hall's address: "Joséphine Hall, Secretarial Aunts, of 324 High Holborn". Colette then offers to take on this work for BR. She did this work for BR while they were together in Stockholm.

There is also a typed version in the Urch typescript: document .104579ov, record 113298. There are some text matches, a mention of Whitehead for example. In this original letter the name Nalle appears (Nalle Kielland); the typed letter uses the pseudonym Ella.

The enclosed woodcut is titled "In the Kingdom of Mourne" by Mabel M. Annesley. The postcard is a photograph of the Mourne mountains, published by W. Linton, Castlewellan (the castle in Ireland where Colette grew up).

The enclosure is 8 pages of As the Sight is Bent, the autobiography of sister Mabel Annesley, which was edited by Colette. It includes title page, table of contents and foreword.

In this original letter Colette writes that she is not sending roses this year but instead a gift "in print (via Ralph Schoenman)". In the typed version (document .104579pe, record 113307), however, she writes that she is sending roses and that she expects he will be glad when his 90th birthday is over.

There is also a card in this file which accompanied the roses Colette sent to Russell. The card notes that she is sending the birthday roses early before she leaves for Sweden.
