Dear Warder,
I regret to say that the terms you offer in regard to an advance on my proposed History of Philosophy are not such as would make it possible for me to find the time necessary for doing the work. It is a large undertaking and calls for considerable advances.
I made it clear in my last letter to you that I could not undertake the book without an advance of 1000 dollars now. Before rejecting your offer of 500 dollars I took steps to confirm that my own terms were reasonable and ascertained that other publishers were ready to offer me much more than I had asked from you.
As you are unable to offer me the minimum advance necessary to make the book possible, I consider that the option clause referring to this book in my last contract with you (for the Inquiry Into Meaning and Truth) is at an end. I shall be glad to hear that you concur.
Yours sincerely,
