"The Brains Trust for next week is off, owing to 'Victory'." "This 'Victory' is dreadful. Hatred of everybody by everybody, Germans to be houseless and starving, Russia already taking on the role the Nazis were playing, the next war already clearly in prospect. I have not at any time felt more unhappy than now. Peter is sunk in almost hysterical gloom, which does not make things easier."

My dear Gamel
The Brains Trust for next week is off, owing to “Victory”.1 So I have no business to oblige me to come to London, and for various rather complicated reasons it would not be wise for me to go to London merely for pleasure. This is a severe disappointment to me. When I do manage to see you I will tell you all about the ways in which I am not a free agent.
This “Victory” is dreadful. Hatred of everybody by everybody, Germans to be homeless and starving, Russia already taking on the role the Nazis were playing, the next war already clearly in prospect. I have not at any time felt more unhappy than now. Peter is sunk in almost hysterical gloom, which does not make things easier. I wish I could have seen you. Goodbye with love.
Yrs ever
B.
