BR TO RALPH BARTON PERRY, 3 AUG. 1915

Dear Perry

Your criticisms of me in the International Journal of Ethics called for a reply, and I have at last produced two — one more controversial, for the I. J. of E.,2 the other explanatory, for the Atlantic Monthly. You will see from the enclosed that it is not my fault the A. M.3 contains no reference to you. The I. J. of E. said it had no room for my reply earlier — the delay is therefore not my fault. I realize that all sensible men agree with you against me, but I hold to my opinion. I wish I could argue it with you face to face; I believe I could convince you. I have learnt many things about the underground parts of human nature since the war began — partly from introspection, for the instinctive part of me is as fiercely patriotic as any Junker. I think people in America cannot really judge, since they do not feel the hot breath of fierceness. An American lately landed described it to me as being like stepping into an oven. We are all rather mad — some in one direction, some in another. I saw a number of German newspapers: German-American writings in them, even Münsterburg’s, seemed cool sanity among raving maniacs. Remember me to Mrs Perry. How happy we were last year, while the world was young.

Yrs v. sinc.
