BR TO ROLLO RUSSELL, 16 JULY 1893
BRACERS 53656. ALS. McMaster. SLBR 1: #8

<Trinity College letterhead>
July 16. 1893

My dear Uncle Rollo

I was very much ashamed when I got your letter to find I had forgotten your birthday: I remembered it a few days before and had been going to write to you but somehow forgot at the right time. It is true we meet terribly seldom now: I do wish you would come some day to Cambridge: the Long would be just the best possible time: any Sat. to Monday you could spare, or any other time if that is impossible to you, would be delightful for me. I could put you up in College if you would like. Besides you have never seen my present rooms, which are very different from my old ones. — I am very glad you are going to read Brand: I think with the exception of the last act which seems to me almost unmeaning it is the greatest play of Ibsen’s I know: and in parts is really as great as anything could be. I read it to Granny lately and she thought it wonderful too. — I hope I shall be able to come to Dunrozel some time in September: I should like to do so very much if I can. — It is delightful doing work that I really like, as it was some time since I had ceased to care much for Mathematics. But a year seems a hopelessly short time to get through so much reading, especially as it is impossible to read many hours a day with profit because one has to let what has been read soak in and get absorbed, which is a slow process. — It was splendid in the Lakes: brilliant sunshine every day, nice walks over the hills taking one down to Ullswater and other Lakes. But it is very nice here too as almost all my friends are up. I do hope you will come some day. — I hope Arthur still gets on with his German governess and begins to get on with his German.

Your affec nephew
Bertrand Russell.
