Cher Monsieur,

Me voici enfin de retour chez moi (depuis hier). Nous avons dû tous les deux voyager beaucoup pendant ces derniers temps. D’abord, ma femme est allée en Bretagne avec une amie malade qu’elle voulait soigner : impossible pour moi de l’accompagner, parce qu’il fallait qu’elle soit seule avec son amie, et aussi parce que je ne voulais pas quitter mes études. Depuis j’ai été en Irelande,^a et ensuite à Londres et en Normandie avec le frère de mon ami qui est mort dernièrement. J’aurais voulu vous voir, mais il m’était impossible de quitter mon compagnon, qui a subi une douleur presqu’insupportable.

J’espère que votre santé s’est rétablie depuis que la chaleur a cessé, et que vous êtes content du congrès des espérantistes à Boulogne.

Quant à l’article de Pierre Boutroux, je n’y trouve pas d’idées qui valent grand’chose. Je pense y répondre, en ajoutant une note par Whitehead, qui est fort mécontent de l’usage qu’on a fait de ses remarques. Il croyait que c’était une conversation où il s’agissait d’expliquer les choses à un jeune homme qui, visiblement, ne comprenait pas complètement les idées dont il s’agissait. Dans une telle conversation, on cherche des phrases intelligibles, plutôt que des énoncés exacts. — En effet, le jeune homme est assez bête. Il dit : la mathématique s’évolue,^b donc on n’a pas à faire à des constantes. C’est confondre la mathématique avec ce que nous en savons. Un enfant pourrait dire : le nombre des lettres de l’alphabet n’est pas fixe, puisque j’en apprends tous les jours une nouvelle. Et l’idée que la théorie des fonctions (dans le sens technique) offre des difficultés pour nous n’a rien de réel ni même de vraisemblable.

J’espère que vous trouverez des écrits de M. Hannequin ; il est triste quand un esprit pénétrant et profond ne laisse pas un digne monument au monde.

Dear Sir,

Here I am back home at last (since winter). We have both had to travel a great deal recently. First, my wife has gone to Brittany with a sick friend whom she is trying to take care of: I cannot accompany her because she must be alone with her friend, and also because I do want to leave my work. Since I have been in Ireland, and then in London and in Normandy with the brother of a friend who recently died. I would like to see you, but it is impossible to leave my companion, who has suffered insupportable sorrow. I hope that your health is better since the heat ended, and that you are happy with the conference of Esper?? at Boulogne. As regards the article by Pierre Boutroux, I don’t find ideas in it which are of great value. I am thinking for my reply, of adding a note by Whitehead, who is very unhappy with the one made of his remarks. He thinks that it is a conversation where he has to ?? something to a young man who, obviously, does not completely understand the ideas being put forward. In such a conversation, one searches for intelligible phrases, rather than exact statements. In effect; the young man is very ??. He says: mathematics evolves, therefore it does not deal with ??. It confuses mathematics with what we know of it. A child might say: the number of letters in the alphabet is not ??, since I learn a new one every day. And the idea that the thing of functions (in the technical sense) ??, gives difficulties for us is neither true nor even probable. I hope that you have found the writings of M. ?? ; it is sad when a penetrating and profound mind does not leave a worthy monument to the world. I wish you good health, and send my cordial greetings.
