Dear Ponsonby
I am writing to you on behalf of Count Karolyi. He came to see me yesterday to tell me that two representatives of the Hungarian Socialist Party are in London, at Garland’s Hotel, having come to lay before the Government the views of Hungarian Socialists as to the proposed loan to Hungary. He informed me that MacDonald thinks it unwise to see them officially, but he thought you might perhaps be willing to meet them unofficially at my house, in which case he would bring them at any time convenient to you. It would have to be during the next three or foura days, as their funds do not allow them to stay beyond Saturday. I think you will agree that it would create a deplorable impression if the Government refused to see men on account of the fact that they are suffering for theb opinions which are embodied in the Labour Party’s programme.
I should be very grateful if you would let me know your decision as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely
Bertrand Russell.
