My Darling1

Thank you for your nice letter, which I found when I got home. It was too late to write last night. It is very nice to find Kate so flourishing. — I had a pleasant time in Holland; the Dutch were very friendly, and all talked English perfectly. My lecture was above the heads of most of the audience, but I think they rather enjoyed being puzzled. Their houses are incredibly clean, their furniture solid and good, their meals colossal; in the intervals between mouthfuls they tell one how much more simply they live than we do. One gets the impression that ever since the 17th century they have lived below their income and invested their savings prudently. When I suggested that the English might lose India, they got nervous about Java. My host was a Doctor, a nerve specialist, disciple of Jung, believer in astrology. (Jung is far more superstitious than Freud.) His name is Dr. On The Hop, roughly speaking. I had a perfectly smooth crossing both ways. When I saw how rich they were, I had no scruples in having asked my fare. Amsterdam has a lot of new building that is very good — better than any other new domestic architecture I have seen — blocks of flats. The old parks are very picturesque — we missed them the day we were there.

£62 from Harper’s — so we shan’t starve yet.

I do miss you dreadfully Darling, I shall be glad when you get home. I keep thinking how lovely it will be to have a honeymoon in Paris. All love, my Treasure.

Your
B.
