My Darling Treasure

This is probably my last letter — God be praised. This week’s English mail has not reached me yet but Feakins informs me by post that there is a birthday cable from you saying all well. I wonder if you are at Carn Voel.

I find the American Govt. is going to take about £150 from me as income tax, so my haul will be that much less than I hoped. As the time goes on I get more and more sick of the job — another month would drive me insane. Thank God I leave this country in 10 days.

My meeting in Buffalo was got up by a man named Quinlan, whom you and I knew in Russia — Irish-American. He didn’t love the Bolshies because they put him in gaol. I was entertained there by a Professor whose job is to teach adultery to matrons, with demonstrations — he has a lovely Jewess as assistant. I wish Yanks would sometimes do things for fun and not solemnly, but I find lots of Sherwood-Anderson stuff, a Puritanical outbreak of sex from a stern sense of duty. It must be needed when Yanks are the object.

I am tired but not too tired, and bored to the point of extinction. I think of nothing but home and being with you again. I hope John is less nervy now his teeth are through. Goodbye Beloved.
