My dearest Colette

Do come to London when you can; either Tuesday or Wed. any week is likely to suit me.  In Cornwall my children2 made a barrier, but I wanted you to know them and what they mean to me. Alone with you I am sure I could come with you into the world we used to live in. I am entirely alone, without even a char except when demanded, at 38 Bernard Street.3 I need time to break down reserves, but if we could be a whole evening and night alone together I believe it could be done — Self-control is very necessary at most times, but it kills one’s soul if it never stops. Come as soon as you can. I know love is still alive in me, though so deeply buried that it is hard to liberate.
