"Sunday My Darling—I am sorry I was so depressed yesterday—it is purely subjective and merely means that something or other is gone wrong with me physically."

My Darling
I am sorry I was so depressed yesterday — it is purely subjective and merely means that something or other is gone wrong with me physically. But I must deal with it, and I must avoid oppressing you with my spleen. I went to see Gertler3 today and walked home with a Frenchwoman I found there, who designs dresses for Omega4 — I enjoyed hearing about French things and talking French, and the walk did me good — I have proposed myself to Garsington5 for next week-end — Don’t take my depressions seriously — I know what to do: plenty of exercise, and a good deal of people I don’t know well — I get imprisoned in Self, and want things into which I can’t thrust Self. I hate myself in these moods, and feel not fit to live — but I will soon get all right again. Forgive me. You are quite right not to encourage me to talk about my moods — You are so infinitely good to me that I hate to vampire you —
Goodnight Darling. I won’t be depressed tomorrow —
