My dearest Darling

Your letters are a joy to get — I think you would be amused to see how I snatch them from the phlegmatic hands of Smith3 when he comes with them in the morning. — I don’t want those proofs back till you come home. I am glad “Mysticism and Logic”4 interested you. Some of the others you will find technical, some not. I think the 1st, about Science,5 would interest you — it is the best, I think, from the point of view of style.

Herald6 League dinner to Russians last night — I sat between Meynell7 and Mrs ditto, and was bored, bored, bored. Lots of speeches — we all performed our bit — like parrots, of which one says “Pretty Polly” and another says “O you naughty man” — it all seems very futile. We ate and drank and smoked too much, and imagined we were serving the cause of peace.

CEM8 says her people are much enjoying your visit.

I lunched today with Hodgkin of Darlington9 — a worthy Quaker, who talked against Guild Socialism — he also bored me.  The whole point is that I want to get back to philosophy — which is a sign of life, as you say.

I can’t wait for the end of the war. I can retire from Acting Chairmanship10 at the end of the year, when I suppose there will be new elections.

Goodnight my Darling, my loved one. Eight days now! If it were eight minutes, it would seem an eternity.

B.
