Good Friday 1918.

Dearest O —

I wish I could see you once more before I go in. Is there no chance of your coming to London? — The situation now is far more terrible than it has ever been; it is really hard to keep up any sort of courage. They seem to have decided to raise the military age, so I suppose I shall remain in prison from April 12 till the end of the war, which may be many years. Possibly I could get off, like Norton, by having my philosophical work recognized as of national importance, but my duty to the Absolutists seems to make that impossible. It is a pity. My brain is better than it has been for years, owing to the Dr’s treatment, and I am longing to get on with philosophy. Still, I have done the bulk of my work — it is not comparable to the waste of a young man.

I have lost almost all hope for Europe. And it is clear that all that pacifists have done has been wholly useless, except to show that it is possible to remain sane and courageous even in war-time. — Do come up once more if you can — not before Thursday, but any day after that.
