My Darling1
The whole thing was a trick of nerves. I feel sure now that I ought not to see you at present, until I am calmer. As soon as I thought of not seeing you just now, my nerves relaxed — now I feel absolutely nothing, not even sorrow for the pain I have given you. My Aunt Agatha was once engaged to a curate, but — so I understand — she got a notion that he had murdered Lord Clauricarde, and tried to take him to the police-station, so the engagement had to be broken off. That was 30 years ago, and she loves him still. I seem to attribute equally imaginary crimes to you. It is all worry over work really. I must live quietly for a bit and avoid excitements. I have been very nearly out of my mind, but am now quite sane again. Please think as kindly of me as you can. I shall certainly be all right after walking with Sanger. I go to Rozeldene, Hindhead, Haslemere, tomorrow. I must come back here Sunday or Monday and I have to see the dentist Wed. If you feel any worry, I should not at all feel upset by seeing you Monday. On Wed. I will go to Camb. I think. I am sorry for it all. It is just insanity. I am tired now and quite dead in feeling. Goodnight.
