My Darling Love

I suppose you have written to Cambridge, in which case it will arrive this evening. I am just back from the Phillimores — Bobby motored me up. I disliked my visit very much — I got at cross purposes with Lion, and had tiresome discussions that made matters no better. She said you had told her that in old days I had had another cause of unhappiness besides Alys — I suspected this of being mere inquisitive malice, or was there any sort of foundation? She is always struggling after more intimacy than I desire, talking of things I don’t wish to talk of, and so on. It makes seeing her very difficult.

Dearest I am so longing for you to be back. Now that I am not working, the time goes more slowly — and the last days are always trying. Tomorrow I shall see Mildred Scott, who has been in France — I haven’t seen her since you went away. I am also going to tea with Karin. Next day I have business and people to see at Camb., then the Whiteheads — so the time will pass. I feel rather flat, from having lost the excitement of work, but very soon I shall be fresh again.

I wonder how things are going with you, and when you leave Lausanne, and when you will get home. I am hoping you will get home on the 17th. You never told me what you would like for your birthday. I am too stupid to write more — I slept badly and my head is like cotton-wool. My love is always with you Dearest, and my heart yearns for you. Goodbye.
