My Darling
Your letter with the lovely gentian and narcissus arrived this morning. The narcissus still smelt delicious — it must have been heavenly there. — I don’t the least know why you got no letter from me. Perhaps it stayed with the concierge — I think I omitted to put “chez Madame Chartier.” — The heat keeps on and is oppressive. I am getting tired, and my brain no longer works as it did when I began writing. But I want to plough on, and get my first draft done.
Fortitude seemed to me very good. The character of Peter is admirable. But my faith in the man was a little shaken by his gross over-estimate of Mrs Belloc Lowndes, whom he calls Mrs Launce. I think he must be a bad judge of particular people. His picture of St. Ives is very good. And the old father is wonderful.
I am glad to have read the book. Do you want it sent back to Lausanne?
I am very tired but I must get to work — Forgive this scrap — my mind is quite empty — Goodbye Darling. Much love.
Your
B
