My Darling

I have so much to do today that I must only write a short letter — I am going over to St. Ives to lunch with Sir George Askwith (Lady Askwith’sa father married my aunt) — then at 4 I have to go to a ceremony here, opening a psychological laboratory — (Wittgenstein is exhibiting an apparatus for psychological investigation of rhythmb.) — then I have my lecture and my evening — so my 10 pp. if done at all must be done before 12. But I am 12 pp. up on my average, so I have some margin. — Sanger is coming to me for the week-end, and as you will see from the enclosed, Miss Stawell is coming to tea Sunday.

How difficult the Anrep business is — I think and think about it, and can’t get it straight. I feel you see it clearly now, because of course you know them all and have talked it over — but I still don’t see the rights and wrongs — I mean I can make myself see it in various different ways, each quite convincing but for the others.

I am making friends with Wolfe’s brother, who is a history fellow here. Mediaeval history is his subject and I asked him about 13th century, but he said nothing. I don’t really either like him or find him interesting, but he is a civilized human being — he has read most of the best books, not only English ones like most people here. — I am getting a wonderful knowledge of ecclesiastics, which delights me. Simpson (my Oxford parson) preached and published a sermon saying it was a pity to make ordinands say they believe every word of the Bible when they don’t. The replies he gets are of 3 kinds: 1st the fine old fogeys, who say it must be very rare for people not to believe every word of the Bible, and that such freaks can’t be provided for; 2nd those who say that of course no one for a moment supposes that the “belief” is to be understood literally, and that there is no reason to alter it because it deceives no one; 3rd those who say yes no doubt it would be well to alter it, but so much else wants doing that it seems queer to make such a fuss about this one point. He gives me these letters to read and they confirm my worst prejudices.

Now I must get to work. Goodbye Darling. My thoughts and love are with you every moment.
