My Darling Darling

I am sorry you got the impression that I was hurt. I really wasn’t in the very slightest — it was only the feverish feeling that the moments were slipping away. I am very happy in essentials, and I don’t think I shall find the 6 weeks hard to get through, at any rate if my work goes well.

I liked Madame A very much indeed. She was different from what I expected because she did not seem passionate — she made the impression of a person naturally placid. It made me think there had been less pain in her letters than I thought. I believe it is all right, and one ought not to have any feeling against Anrep.

Cook is right in thinking her beauty is not my type! I couldn’t fall in love with anyone who had such fat fingers (I am not in love with myself!) — but I did like her very much. She seemed witty and clever and kind. The book I spoke of is Fustel de Coulanges, La Cité Antique.

I am writing now because I shall be busy when I get to Cambridge. Dearest you may set your mind at rest about me. I am very happy, and it is a solid happiness, not a fool’s paradise. I do hope your time at Lausanne will not be too wearing. Don’t tire yourself writing to me more than scraps. Goodbye Darling. My love enfolds you always.
