My Dearest Love

I have no German stamps, so this will probably have to go without a stamp. I left the budding Rufus without any regret at Nuremberg, after dining with him and treating him with the utmost politeness. I have had no adventures so far, beyond being told by a German that my feet smelt, to which I replied that if he put his nose further off he might suffer less. I had already come to the conclusion that he was mad before this incident. Now I have only one fellow passenger, and may hope for a comfortable night.

I do hope you will really be the better for your mud baths and waters — I quite think you will. And the rest of your time abroad ought to do you good too — I shall expect to find you tremendously well when you come home. Then I shall get you tasks in philosophy and make you write answers to questions — Such as “Explain Spinoza’s doctrine of modes. How does an infinite and eternal mode differ from an attribute?” Then you will need another cure at Xmas.

Dearest I can’t write properly in this very shaky train. The whole summer has been so wonderful that I can’t find words.

I have a very deep inward happiness — altho’ I owe it all to you I believe something of it would survive if I lost you — a faith and a knowledge of how it is possible to live, which I did not have before. Now good night my Darling, my Ottoline — My heart and soul and mind are yours utterly.

B.
